HARLEM — Police believe the gunman who fatally shot an aspiring chef in the Polo Grounds Monday night may be from a gang based in East Harlem, law enforcement sources said.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Wednesday the gunman who killed Jordan Barber, 18, was believed to be from the St. Nicholas Houses on 131st Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, but investigators now think he may live within the confines of the 23rd precinct, police sources said.
Barber and two pals were standing in front of 2931 Frederick Douglass Blvd. about 10:45 p.m. when a group of 30 people approached, police said.
“We have one shooter in this crowd,” Boyce said. “This group came and quite a few put their hoods up, and one of the individuals shot into the crowd.”
Barber told his mother “I love you” in his final moments after being wounded in the neck, his shattered relatives said.
“He was on the ground. Blood was coming out of his mouth,” Barber’s mom, Lashanda Holman, 34, said. “I was telling him to hang on. I knew my baby was dead.”
