BUSHWICK — Local brewery Braven's newest beer might taste a little like olden times.

Braven's debuting its new pilsner Saturday, a beer that's an updated version of the same beers that old Bushwick breweries made in the early 1900s, said co-owner Marshall Thompson.

Bushwick Pilsners are dry, crisp and a little hoppier than classic New York pilsners, with a slight bitter finish, Thompson explained.

Thompson and co-owner Eric Feldman used a recipe from home brewer and updated some of the ingredients, Thompson added.

Some dozen breweries operated in Bushwick through the 20th century, though the last one finally shut down in 1976 as the market changed.

"We wanted to do something that would kind of honor the breweries that came before us," Thompson said.

Feldman and Thompson will be at Left Hand Path, at 89 Wyckoff Ave., on Saturday, July 4 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. with free burgers, hot dogs, and other barbecue items to debut the new pilsner.

The pilsner will be available for purchase at $5 a pint.

Besides the beer itself, some of the free food will have a little bit of beer flavoring.

Corn will be roasted with a butter flavored with Braven's White IPA, while the hot dogs will be marinated in the White IPA overnight.

"We will be using beer in multiple formats," Thompson said.
