UPPER WEST SIDE — The NYPD is adding more personnel in front of an elementary school after children there said a man tried to lure them into his black SUV with candy Tuesday morning, police and parents said.

The incident at P.S. 87, which was reported to parents by school staff, will lead to an increase in police personnel in front of the West 78th Street school, NYPD sources said.

P.S. 87 Assistant Principal Susan Federici sent parents an alert Tuesday afternoon, according to a parent at the school who shared the email with DNAinfo New York.

Federici said she reported it to the NYPD and that police would boost their presence at the school in the remaining days of school before it closes for the summer this Friday, according to the email.

"The teachers are aware of the incident and will be reminding their children about safety and strangers," the email said.

The news was first reported by the West Side Rag.

Police confirmed they're adding extra police in front of the school, but 20th Precinct Capt. Michael Falcon could not confirm any details of the alleged incident.

The children who reported it to the Federici were not the ones approached by the man, and those involved have not been interviewed yet, he said.

"We don't know if it actually happened," he said, however, "just to err on the side of caution, there will be extra officers out there."

Neither P.S. 87's principal nor Federici immediately responded to request for comment.

A Department of Education spokesman confirmed that the department is aware of the incident and is working with the NYPD.
