MIDTOWN — A manhole fire caused a massive plume of black smoke to billow over Midtown Friday morning.
About 60 firefighters responded to the blaze in front of 579 Fifth Ave., on 47th Street, around 7:10 a.m., FDNY officials said.
Authorities shut down 47th Street between Madison and Fifth avenues to traffic as the smoke gushed.
The blaze was still not under control more than an hour later, the FDNY said, but no one had been reported injured.
