Car Jumps Curb and Hits Child Walking on Sidewalk, Police Say

By Gwynne Hogan | June 3, 2015 9:15am

BROOKLYN — A driver who accelerated forward instead of backing up while attempting to park jumped the curb and struck a child on the sidewalk in Sunset Park, officials said.

A small boy was walking slowly down 7th Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, fiddling with a toy in one hand, at roughly 2 p.m. on Monday, according to police and video obtained by NBC New York.

All of a sudden a car roared into the frame, first striking a tree that snapped and knocked down the boy. Then the car rolled over both the boy and the tree, the video shows.

The child escaped with minor injures and was taken to the Lutheran Hospital in stable condition, according to fire and police officials.

The driver remained at the scene of the incident and was not expected to be charged, police said.
