Cargo Bike Stolen From Front of Park Slope Brownstone, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — This thief got away with quite a haul.

A cargo bike designed to carry a parent, children and packages was stolen from in front of a brownstone on Berkeley Place and Sixth Avenue on May 16, according to a police report.

The stolen bicycle was a Bike Friday Haul-a-Day, the report stated. The custom-built two-wheelers have a special seat in the rear that's big enough to hold three toddlers, according to a photo on the Bike Friday website.

The stolen bike was also outfitted with an additional child seat and a carrier rack suitable for hauling groceries, according to the police report. The theft happened around 8 p.m. on a Saturday night. The 40-year-old bike owner told police he was sleeping at the time.

Other notable crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details drawn from police reports:

► An 87-year-old woman had $7,740 in cash stolen from her purse shortly after a trip to the bank on April 10. The woman told police she stopped in a Subway sandwich shop on Seventh Avenue and Fifth Street at 2:30 p.m. with her home health aide.

The woman said she gave her purse to the aide while she answered a cellphone call, and later discovered that the cash was missing. The woman told police she suspected the aide of swiping the money, but no arrests had been made as of Thursday.

► A rented Ford van was stolen from Second Avenue and Eighth Street on May 13 at roughly 7 p.m.

► A 1998 Dodge Caravan was stolen from near Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue on May 8 about 10 a.m.

Overall, major crimes in the 78th Precinct have increased .34 percent this year compared with the same period in 2014, according to the latest NYPD statistics.
