SOUTH STREET SEAPORT — SmorgasBar's outdoor food and drink vendors are getting ready for their return to the South Street Seaport.
The lineup of artisanal eats, curated by the team behind the Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg, is heading back to the Seaport with eight vendors on cobblestone Fulton Street, between Front and South streets, starting May 21.
SmorgasBar first launched two years ago, but didn't return to the Seaport last summer.
New Seaport vendors this season include Lonestar Empire's slow-smoked Texas-style brisket, Lumpia Shack Filipino spring rolls, as well as Ramen Burger, which serves up burgers with a bun made from ramen noodles, and Schnitz's breaded-chicken sandwiches.
Returning vendors include Cemita’s Mexican sandwiches, Milk Truck grilled cheese, Pizza Moto and Red Hook Lobster Pound.
This season, the food hawkers will sell their bites from inside modern-looking, geometric "pods" that can be easily moved and provide some weather protection.
There will also be a semi-exposed bar with several beers on tap, which will serve mixed drinks, wine and some small bites.
"Smorgasburg was just getting to know the Seaport community in 2013, so it’s sort of ‘reunited and it feels so good’,” said Eric Demby, co-founder with Jonathan Butler of Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Flea in a released statement. “We know our food vendors can’t wait to feed the people again this summer, and we love being part of all the cool stuff happening at the Seaport all season."
The Seaport’s owner, the Howard Hughes Corporation, brought in SmorgasBar in 2013 as part of its Sea/Change program to revitalize the storm-battered neighborhood after Hurricane Sandy.
The Texas-based real estate giant is continuing to bring community programming to the neighborhood as the company reconstructs the Pier 17 mall and pushes controversial plans for a luxury residential tower nearby.
SmorgasBar will be open 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the weekends.
