MIDTOWN — New York City seems to have skipped spring and gone straight into summer.
With the memory of a brutally cold winter still fresh, New Yorkers are basking in temperatures that are well above normal for this time of year, forecasters said.
A weather system pushing in warm air from the south is to blame, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.
May temperatures typically linger around 59.2 degrees. This month, the city's average has been 66.8 degrees.
Monday’s high was expected to reach 81 degrees and Tuesday will top 86, the National Weather Service forecaster said.
April was also drier than usual. The city had just 2.5 inches of precipitation, compared to the usual 4.5 inches.
Temperatures should return to normal later in the week, when the Wednesday and Thursday highs are predicted to be 67 and 69 degrees respectively.
New York could finally see some spring showers Tuesday as thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon.
