STATEN ISLAND — An elderly man was critically wounded when a group of dirt bikers shot him and his wife outside their New Brighton home Sunday afternoon, police said.

The man, 71, and his wife, 63, were outside their home at Crescent Avenue and Jersey Street about 5:30 p.m. when the group of men on bikes rode up to them, according to NYPD and FDNY officials.

Two of the bikers hopped off and opened fire, hitting the man in the stomach and his wife in the left forearm, an NYPD spokesman said.

The bullet went clean through the husband, who was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in critical but stable condition, police said.

His wife was also at the same hospital in stable condition, officials said.

There were no immediate arrests and it was not immediately clear why couple was shot, police said.
