BELMONT — The classmates of a teenage boy suspected of trying to rape a 15-year-old girl Wednesday turned him into police after recognizing him from a surveillance video released the next day, officials said.

Darren Warren, 17, followed the victim up the stairwell of her Hoffman Street apartment, grabbed her from behind and forced her to the ground before attempting to rape her at about 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, NYPD said.

She got away, but not before he snatched her iPhone, police said.

The following day, several students, Warren's classmates at the all-boys Eagle Academy in The Bronx, recognized Warren in the video released by police and ratted him out.

NYPD School Safety Agents brought Warren to the Bronx Special Victims where he was charged with attempted rape on Thursday.

Police also charged Warren with sexual abuse for touching an 11-year-old girl on the buttocks as she was leaving the elevator of a building in May last year, police said.

Information about Warren's lawyer was not immediately available.

The Eagle Academy Foundation, which oversees the school, praised the students who helped identify the suspect.

"We are very proud that our young men have shown through their actions that they will not tolerate alleged criminal behavior," the school said in a statement. "These young men are committed to building safe streets and safe communities."
