BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A large sinkhole that has plagued a Bedford-Stuyvesant street for months opened again on Thursday morning, officials and residents said.
The sinkhole, 3 feet in diameter, opened near 488 Chauncey St. at about 9:25 p.m., a spokesman for the FDNY said.
Firemen secured the area around 10:20 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The block remained closed to traffic as workers from the Department of Environmental Protection examined the sewer line. Representatives did not provide a timeframe for when the street would reopen.
Residents said the sinkhole is a recurring issue in the neighborhood, making it dangerous for children to play in the street.
One neighbor said the crater caused damage to a passing car last week.
“Ever since I’ve been here it’s almost every two months we have someone coming out here to fix it,” said Elizabeth Sweet, a resident who has lived on the block for 45 years. “Workers come to patch it up, wave bye-bye, but then it falls in again."
