QUEENS — The NYPD is rolling out dozens of new surveillance cameras in high crime locations in Southeast Queens, including Merrick and Linden boulevards, officials said.
There are already cameras scattered across the district, but the goal is to further "increase safety and security and cut down on any criminal activities," said Assemblyman William Scarborough, who allocated $1.2 million for the project.
Each camera will include two 360-degree, fisheye lenses. Recordings can be saved and streamed live to the Police Department, officials said.
Three precincts in Scarborough's district will get 10 cameras each to distribute at their discretion. Those include: 103rd covering Jamaica and Hollis, the 113th covering South Jamaica and St. Albans, and the 105th encompassing Queens Village and Cambria Heights.
The cameras should be installed sometime this year, possibly in the summer, Scarborough said.
Overall crime in Southeast Queen has been down, but certain parts of the neighborhood continue to struggle with gangs and gun violence.
