ASTORIA — A sculpture resembling a sinkhole and another that will feature two manmade "trees" are among the works that will be on display at Socrates Sculpture Park this season.
The sculptures will open in May and "draw upon the park’s distinctive landscape and urban terrain,"
Artist Heide Fasnacht's "Suspect Terrain" — designed to look like a sinkhole stretching 30-feet-wide — will be made of painted plywood and elevated off the ground. A small house will sit inside.
The second piece, "Two Trees in Balance" by Gabriela Albergaria, will consist of a pair of "trees" — made by the artist using salvaged tree stumps and branches — which will be suspended on either side of a 10-foot concrete wall using steel cables.
Fasnacht and Albergaria's installations will open May 17 and remain on view through Aug. 30.
Their work will join another massive piece on display at the park this summer, "Living Pyramid" by artist Agnes Denes, a 30-foot-tall structure made of growing plants and flowers.
