THE BRONX — A 17-year-old boy died Saturday morning, two days after he was critically injured when he fell six stories off a building while trying to flee police officers, NYPD officials said.

Hakeem Kuta was smoking marijuana with a large group of other teens, aged 16 to 19, in the lobby of 2685 Valentine Ave., near East 194th Street in the Bronx, about 7:35 p.m. Thursday when a passerby spotted them, police said.

The passerby alerted police officers who were out on patrol and they then approached the kids, police said.

Kuta and the others bolted up to the roof with the officers on their heels, police said.

On the roof, Kuta lost his footing and fell six stories to the ground, police said.

Kuta, of Mott Haven, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries about 10:48 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The NYPD's internal affairs bureau was investigating the incident, police said.
