PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — A new pie shop and cafe has opened in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, serving up slices in a renovated Rogers Avenue storefront.

Pels Pie Co. opened last week at 446 Rogers Ave. between Lefferts Avenue and Lincoln Road, the first business of friends Alison Pels and baker Maddy Gentile, who have worked in a variety of Brooklyn eateries — Pels at Glady’s in Crown Heights and Gentile at The Blue Stove in Williamsburg — but met as co-workers at the Bedford Hill Coffee Bar in Clinton Hill.

“I wanted my own business,” Pels said. “I love food service and I love feeding people, but I just want to work for myself.”

“It’s time!” Gentile added with a laugh.

In addition to serving beer and wine, the two are starting out with a basic pie-and-pastry menu, filled with treats like cheddar bacon scones ($3), banana blueberry bran muffins ($3) and, of course, lots of pie for $4 a slice. (Current flavors include apple, coconut custard, chocolate mousse and peanut butter banana cream, which is vegan.)

But the pair hope to expand to sandwiches and, maybe, brunch “later down the line,” Pels said.

“We’re set up for it,” she said, referencing the space’s many tables and chairs. More seating is available on stools at a long, mint green bar that runs down the middle of the cafe. That and a white tin ceiling, bleached wood on the walls and a row of plants on the sills of large front windows give the new spot a sunny, beachy feel.

The eatery is open seven days a week at 7 a.m., closing at 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 10 p.m. on weekends.
