NEW YORK CITY — After a frigid February and early March, Mother Nature has finally given the city some long-awaited love Monday with mild temperatures inching up to the balmy mid-50's.

Enjoy it while you can.

Though most of the week will offer radiant skies and mild temperatures, a storm system moving in on Friday night threatens to dump a mix of rain and snow on the five boroughs, meteorologists said.

Still on Monday, social networks buzzed with contented New Yorkers posting pictures of the thawing city and jinxing the forecast with talk of early spring.

"The next couple days are going to be real nice," said David Roache of the National Weather Service, though there's a chance of light rain showers Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

While many joyous tweets trumpeted spring weather, others captured a gritty city reality, that in many cases, melting snow just reveals an underbelly caked with trash.

The week will finish off in the lower 40's but Friday night brings another storm that will last throughout the day Saturday.

Roache said it was still too soon to judge how much accumulation the city should expect or what kind of rain/snow combination will fall.
