BROOKLYN — Aging school buildings in Brooklyn's District 15 will get a host of upgrades under a spending plan Department of Education officials unveiled recently.
The DOE plans to shell out $65.3 million on improvements for District 15 school buildings between 2015 and 2017, officials said at the District 15 Community Education Council meeting last week.
The upgrades, which are all part of the DOE's five-year capital plan, include replacing light fixtures that could contain dangerous PCB chemicals and renovating bathrooms, said Yvette Knight, a project support manager with the DOE's School Construction Authority.
Capital improvements planned for District 15 schools in Park Slope, Sunset Park, Red Hook and other neighborhoods include the following, according to Knight's presentation:
► A science lab upgrade for M.S. 88 on Seventh Avenue and 19th Street.
► A fire alarm for P.S. 10 on Seventh Avenue and 17th Street.
► An improved public address system for P.S. 39 on Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street.
► Renovations for P.S. 118, the school that opened on Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street in 2013 after a rezoning of several Park Slope schools.
► A new boiler for P.S. 15 in Red Hook.
► New masonry on the exterior of Khalil Gibran International Academy in Cobble Hill.
► A renovation for the cafeteria and multi-purpose room at P.S. 371 in Sunset Park.
► Renovations to improve accessibility for disabled students inside the John Jay Educational Campus on Seventh Avenue and Fourth Street, which houses four high schools.
Parents have long wanted a new school built in crowded Sunset Park, and there is funding for a new school there in the DOE's budget, but DOE has not yet found a spot to construct one.
