FORT GEORGE — Police arrested a man Wednesday in connection with a shooting and attempted robbery last week that seriously injured a 20-year-old man, the NYPD said.

Christopher Nieves, 28, and another man tried to rob the victim at gunpoint in front of 445 Audubon Ave. on Feb. 17 about 12:30 a.m., police said. The man was shot in the back during an ensuing struggle over the gun, the NYPD said.

Nieves was charged with felony assault, attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.

The incident marked the first shooting of the year in the 34th Precinct.

Officers arrested three men, including Nieves, while executing a search warrant on Audubon Avenue Wednesday connected to the investigation, 34th Precinct Deputy Inspector Chris Morello said. They recovered .22 caliber handgun, he added.

Morello said that the gun may or may not be the same weapon used in the shooting. He declined to say what led police to Nieves because the investigation is ongoing.

Police said the two other men arrested were charged with drug possession.

Police are still looking for the second suspect in the shooting.

No information about Nieves's lawyer was immediately available. It was not clear if he has a criminal record.
