EAST VILLAGE — A 33-year-old man was fatally shot outside the Lillian Wald Houses in Alphabet City on Monday afternoon, officials said.

Emergency workers were called to 20 Avenue D, near East Third Street, about 4:30 p.m. after Shemrod Isaac was shot four times in the chest outside the building, police said.

Isaac was taken to Beth Israel Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A crowd gathered around Isaac as he lay sprawled out on the sidewalk after the shooting, photos posted on Instagram show.

Neighbors said they were stunned by the brutal crime that occurred in the middle of the afternoon.

"I was shocked," Jonathan Carballo, 22, a criminal justice student who lives on the eighth floor of the building said. Caraballo said he was in his living room when he heard a bang.

"I was staring at him like oh my god I can’t believe this is happening in front of my building,” he said.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning, police said.
