NEW YORK CITY — A bullet fired as part of a firearms test inside the NYPD crime lab building in Jamaica sparked a blaze there, fire and police officials said.
The fire erupted just before 2 p.m. and sent 12 units and some 60 firefighters to the scene at 150-14 Jamaica Ave., fire officials said.
A spokesman for the NYPD said in an email that the fire occurred when "a firearm was being tested."
"During the exam bullets were fired into a rubber matt comprised of recycled plane tires which began to smolder causing a smoke condition," the spokesman said, adding that "there were no injuries and no property damage."
FDNY Chief Chief James Connelly said the incident was "probably hot lead from the ammo."
"It probably got stuck in the rubber, heated the rubber and it started to burn," he said.
Connelly also said the fire was very small and it was contained within approximately 45 minutes
