SUNSET PARK — The children's playground at Sunset Park is closing for a complete redesign that is expected to take more than a year, officials said.

The $2 million reconstruction project will include new play equipment, swings, a spray shower with a safety surface, fencing, landscaping and benches, according to Maeri Ferguson, a spokeswoman for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation.

The playground will remain closed throughout the project's construction, which is expected to begin at the end of March and finish by Summer of 2016.

Funding was allocated to the playground in 2012 by former Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez after the community called for its renovation, according to Councilman Carlos Menchaca.

The project will cost $2.8 million dollars, with $2.4 million from the City Council and $400,000 from the Mayor's office.

"Open space access continues to be a priority of my office, and of this district, and I look forward to an expeditious re-opening of the space for this community. In the meantime—the rest of Sunset Park will remain open, as well as Bush Terminal on the waterfront," Menchaca said via email.
