MIDTOWN — A man was fatally stabbed during a fight inside a deli near Times Square Tuesday night, police said.

The 36-year-old man, whose name was not released but who sources believe was homeless, got into a dispute with another man in the rear of New Star Cafe, 552 Seventh Ave., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The suspect, who police believe may also be homeless, then stabbed the 36-year-old twice in the chest and fled, police said.

The victim made it outside of the deli, rounded the corner and made his way to 213 West 40th St. where officers found him unconscious about 9:30 p.m., NYPD officials said.

He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, police said.

The two men had gotten into an argument earlier in the day at Eighth Avenue and 38th Street, NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said during a press conference at One Police Plaza.

The man was found unconscious outside 213 W. 40th St. in Midtown, police said.

The victim then placed a 911 call about possibly being injured in a fight, Boyce added.

Then about two hours later the victim walked into the cafe looking for the man he had gotten into the altercation with. The victim found the man with six other individuals and then appeared to get into an argument with them, according to surveillance footage.

"Immediately as he goes in [to the cafe] he starts arguing with this individual," Boyce said. "This individual then stabs him twice. He walks outside and he collapses nearby."

Investigators took surveillance footage from the New Star Cafe in hopes of finding the killer who remained at large Wednesday morning, staff and officials said.
