Fire at School Causes Widespread Power Outages, Con Ed Says

NEW SPRINGVILLE — A fire in the basement of a Staten Island elementary school caused hundreds of homes to lose power Tuesday morning, according to Con Edison.

The fire which started in P.S. 69 around 8:32 a.m. knocked out power for 309 homes in New Springville, the spokesman said. Service was restored to customers at 11 a.m.

Students in P.S. 69 were relocated to I.S. 72 after the power loss, a spokesman for the Department of Education said. The DOE notified parents and students will be taken back to P.S. 69 for dismissal, the spokesman said.
