Japanese Store Kiteya Is Leaving SoHo for Somewhere 'Cozier,' Manager Says

By Danielle Tcholakian | December 30, 2014 5:35pm | Updated on January 2, 2015 5:16pm

SOHO — They're saying "sayonara."

Kiteya, a Japanese store that has been on Broome Street for eight years, is leaving SoHo.

The manager, Yumi Iida, said the neighborhood has transformed around the shop to the point that the store no longer feels like it belongs.

"This is too much brand-name compared to when we started here," Iida said. "It's changing."

The store — lined with brightly colored silk bags along one wall and delicate stationery on another and dotted with racks of kimonos — sells clothing, accessories and home goods.

Iida said the owners are looking for a smaller space than their current cavernous location at 464 Broome St., "something cozier."

She said "of course" rent was a factor in the decision to move, but declined to give specifics, saying only that the rent for the store is more than $20,000 each month. The store will move when its lease expires in the spring, she said.

The Sinvin realtors listed on a "Retail for Lease" sign in the store window did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
