CROWN HEIGHTS — Some serious sandwiches parked in Crown Heights this month with the opening of the first brick-and-mortar shop by the owners of the Morris grilled cheese food truck.

The Morris Sandwich Shop had a quiet opening the Saturday before Christmas next to the popular Caribbean spot Glady’s on Lincoln Place, just west of Franklin Avenue, said Ben Latham, Morris’ director of operations.

Latham and his business partner, Glady’s owner Michael Jacober, started selling grilled cheese from their food truck in 2011 and serving an expanded selection of sandwiches at Glady’s around the same time. But when the menu changed to more plated dishes, the duo started thinking about creating a spot just for sandwiches.

“We kind of got away from the sandwich thing [at Glady’s]," Latham said. "I think there are definitely people in the neighborhood who really liked the sandwiches, so we figured we’d incorporate those sandwiches and a couple new ones."

The result is a counter-service eatery with half a dozen regular sandwiches like the “Pollos Hermanos,” an adaptation of a buffalo chicken wing with roasted chicken, hot sauce mayo and pickled celery for $7, Latham said. The classic Morris grilled cheese — made with New York State cheddar, raw cow’s milk Landaff cheese and Orwasher’s Bakery bread — is available for $5.

Though the new shop doesn’t publicly offer everything sold in the Morris food truck, Latham said die-hard fans can ask for their “secret menu” to get something they like from the truck, since it serves as the “home base” for the mobile business.

Prices range from $4 for a breakfast sandwich to an $8 fontina, kale and fennel butter sandwich. House-made sodas are available for $3. In the new year, Latham said Morris will serve drip coffee from Williamsburg-based roaster Toby’s Estate and bagels from Terrace Bagels of Windsor Terrace.

The Morris Sandwich Shop is currently open at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day with hours expanding to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. soon. For more information, visit the company's website.
