Man Dies 6 Months After Being Shot in Harlem, Police Say

MANHATTAN — A man died on Christmas Eve, six months after he was shot in the neck, police said.

The victim, 32-year-old Jorge Briu, was one of two people shot at West 136th Street and Riverside Drive in Hamilton Heights on June 19, police said.

Police said they responded to the call about 11:45 p.m. and found Briu sitting in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the neckThe second victim, a 21-year-old man, was struck in the head by a bullet.

Jonathan Suero, 21, was arrested on July 14 and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police did not provide any details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting or a motive.

Briu was rushed to Harlem Hospital after the shooting and died from his injuries on Dec. 24 at Einstein Hospital in The Bronx, according to police. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as complications from the gunshot wound, police said.

The other victim, whose identity was not available, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital on the night of the shooting. Police did not have further information on his condition.

Attorney information for Suero was not immediately available. He's next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 19, when more charges are expected to be filed against him, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.
