GOWANUS — A group that runs summer camps and after-school programs for girls is launching a magazine aimed at young female tinkerers.

Curious Jane, which teaches girls how to design their own toys and engineer gadgets, recently released a "sneak peek" issue of Curious Jane magazine, aimed at girls age 6 to 11.

The bimonthly periodical, which will make its official debut in early 2015, has elements of traditional women's magazines such as recipes and an advice column. But the main focus is on giving young girls ideas for make-at-home projects both big and small.

The "sneak peek" issue had features on how to host a DIY Halloween party and how to make light-up fox ears using felt, a glue gun and LED lights. There was also a profile of a Brooklyn artist who makes forts, and a "letter from the editor" from the young daughter of Curious Jane's founder, Samantha Razook Murphy.

“There aren’t very many adults in the magazine. We want the girls to be represented — their thoughts and ideas,” said Curious Jane's marketing coordinator, Melisa Coburn.

Subscriptions are $45 for a year of the ad-free magazine, and Coburn said the magazine makes an ideal holiday present for girls.

“We want girls to feel excited about making and creating things and we want them to feel accomplished,” Coburn said. “We want them to feel encouraged that they were able to take on these projects and make them."
