STAPLETON — The Staten Island MakerSpace will turn into Santa's workshop on Sunday.

The spot called for volunteers to come make simple toys like cars and animals out of scrap wood to give as Christmas presents to children at Staten Island University Hospital.

"It started out as an idea for a workshop that we would do for families, and we started wondering if there was somebody we could donate the toys to," said DB Lampman, co-founder of the space.

The MakerSpace will form an assembly line for volunteers aged 12 and up.

"We’ll set it up kind of in a factory style," said Lampman.

"We’ll have a group of people manning the saw, manning the sander. We're going to try to make it flow as smoothly as possible."

The toys made at the shop will be donated to the 20th annual Richard Gardner Jr. Memorial Toy Drive, which gives out gifts to children in need at the hospital on Christmas Eve.

The drive honors Staten Island resident and police officer Richard Gardner Jr., who died in 1995 at age 24.

The Staten Island MakerSpace's "Santa's Workshop" will be on Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 450 Front St. For more information, visit the website.
