HUNTERS POINT — A ramen shop that got its start in the neighborhood as an after-hours pop-up in a local bagel store last year will debut in its own location Monday night, according to the owner.

Mu Ramen, helmed by restaurant veterans Heidy He and Joshua Smookler, will open at 12-09 Jackson Ave. They originally started serving up noodles out of nearby Bricktown Bagels after the breakfast spot closed for the day.

The couple soon announced a plan to open their own location in the neighborhood, taking over and renovating the Jackson Avenue space.

"We're very excited," said Smookler, a chef who has cooked at eateries like Per Se and Zutto in TriBeCa, while He's resume also includes Zutto and Japanese restaurant Nobu. "We're looking forward to seeing our regulars."

A menu is posted on the eatery's website, but Smookler said it will "change quite often," though some dishes will be permanent fixtures.

Those include the signature Mu Ramen, according to Smookler, as well as the spicy miso ramen — a soup made with red miso and pork topped with scallion, chopped pork, menma (made from bamboo shoots), corn, sesame and chili oil.

The restaurant will seat 22 people, the couple said earlier this year. It won't take reservations or accept walk-in parties with more than four guests, according to its website.

Mu Ramen will be open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Smookler says they plan to expand to serve lunch in about a month, and to open for late night hours a few months from now.
