QUEENS — A popular Kew Gardens coffee shop, known for its artistic atmosphere and reading series, has opened its second location — in Midwood, Brooklyn — offering a mix of high-quality coffee, healthy food and art to the neighborhood.

Odradeks, named after a creature from a short story by Franz Kafka, has become a well-liked hangout on Austin Street in Kew Gardens, where locals come for a cup of coffee and snacks, but also to check out art exhibits by local artists, listen to live music and attend poetry readings.

The new location, at 1519 Avenue J, in Midwood, will also promote local artists and showcase their works, the owners said.

But the Brooklyn location will also offer more food options than the coffee shop in Kew Gardens.

In addition to sandwiches, salads and pastries, which are baked on premises, it will also serve breakfast and lunch.

The goal, the owners said, is to provide high quality coffee — the shop uses the beans from Heart Coffee Roasters — and light, healthy food, made with seasonal ingredients.

The owners said they chose Midwood because the area lacks coffee shops.

“It’s a sector in Brooklyn that is being very underserved in terms of coffee and food,” said Josip Drazenovich, one of the owners.

“I think that people in the neighborhood are ready for something that is fresh and we are offering another option.”

Among the breakfast items, patrons will find Kafka breakfast sandwich, which consists of fried egg, cheese, tomato, sriracha mayo and baguette ($6.50) and Salmon & the egg, brioche with whipped cream cheese, smoked salmon, pickled onion, capers, poached egg and dill ($8).

During lunchtime, the coffee shop offers quiche ($5), poutine, which consists of yellow potatoes, mushroom gravy and cheese ($6) as well as a variety of toasts, including Banh Mi, served on baguette with Shiitake mushrooms, extra firm tofu, cilantro, pickled carrot and sriracha mayo ($10).

“It’s food that you feel good about eating,” Drazenovich said.
