SOUNDVIEW — A young woman was thrown down a flight of subway stairs as she fought off a thief who snatched her cell phone during the morning commute on Monday, police said.

The woman had just stepped off of the southbound 6 train at Saint Lawrence Avenue station in The Bronx at approximately 9:30 a.m when a man ripped her white iPhone 5 from her hand, the NYPD said.

The 25-year-old woman chased the thief towards the subway stairs leading to the street but the man pushed her down the stairs and fled, causing cuts and bruises to her right hand, police said. The woman was treated on the scene and did not suffer any major injuries, officials said.

The suspect was described as approximately 5-feet-tall and weighing 140 pounds, police said. He was caught on surveillance video released by the police and was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and a black jacket, the NYPD said.
