Woman Fights Off Mugger on 7th Avenue Station Stairs, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — A woman fought off a would-be mugger on the stairs to the Seventh Avenue F/G stop in Park Slope, sending him fleeing into the train tunnel, according to a police report.

The 21-year-old woman told police she was walking down the steps to the northbound platform on the Eighth Avenue and Ninth Street side of the station when a man ran toward her, grabbed her, and tried to take her cell phone and wallet, according to a police report.

After a physical struggle, the woman managed to fight off her attacker, and he jumped onto the northbound track and ran into the tunnel, according to police. The woman wasn't injured in the attack, police said. The suspect was wearing white sneakers and gray sweats and appeared to be in his mid-20s, the victim told police.

Other notable crimes in this week's blotter at the 78th Precinct include the following, with details from police reports:

► A 51-year-old homeless man was drinking a beer on the sidewalk when he was punched in the face by two men who then robbed him, police said.

The victim was attacked at 5 a.m. on Sept. 29, near Fourth Avenue and 13th Street, according to a 36-year-old man who told police he witnessed the attack. The thieves took the homeless man's backpack, which contained $25 in cash, a wallet, cell phone, clothes and papers. The victim was taken to Lutheran Medical Center.

 A $17,000 diamond ring was stolen from a Garfield Place and Sixth Avenue apartment while the tenants were sleeping on Oct. 3. The burglar broke in through the locked front door just after midnight and also swiped two iPads, two iPhones and a Samsung laptop. The ring was a custom-made engagement ring with a 1.25-carat oval diamond.

 A 39-year-old woman had her wallet stolen out of the bottom of her stroller as she shopped at the Target on Flatbush Avenue on Oct. 5 about 4:45 p.m. The thief got away with the victim’s keys, credit cards, Metrocard and $260 in cash.

 A 54-year-old man had his credit cards stolen out of his wallet while he exercised at the YMCA on Ninth Street near Sixth Avenue on Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. The victim stashed his valuables locked in a locker while he worked out. He then left the gym and went to nearby store, where he realized that his credit cards had been stolen.

 A 62-year-old woman was asleep inside her apartment on St. Mark's Avenue near Fifth Avenue when a burglar crept in through an open window on Sept. 29 about 11 p.m. The thief snatched a wallet, a Blackberry phone, an Android phone, an iPad, a debit card and credit cards.

Major crime in the 78th Precinct has declined 7.6 percent this year compared with the same period in 2013, according to the latest NYPD statistics.
