HAMILTON HEIGHTS — A cat burglar tried to rob three apartments in the same building over the course of the same night before finally being chased off empty-handed, police said.

The suspect climbed up the fire escape of a Hamilton Heights apartment building and sneaked into a Hamilton Terrace apartment through an open window about midnight Oct. 4, where he began rummaging through the drawers, according to the NYPD.

When tenant confronted the burglar, the suspect claimed he was friends with the man's roommate and left empty-handed, police said.

Undeterred, the suspect climbed back up the fire escape into the building several hours later and crept into another apartment, but left empty-handed again, police said.

Again he tried to open a third apartment window, he was spotted by a resident and fled, the NYPD said.

Police released a video that shows the bearded suspect wandering through the hallways and coming out of one of the apartments.

Police described the suspect as 5-foot-10, about 160 pounds. He wore a grey hooded sweatshirt, dark cargo pants and black sneakers.
