LENOX HILL — A yellow cab hopped a curb and struck a pedestrian on East 59th Street Monday before slamming into an empty storefront, officials and witnesses said.

The cabdriver, whose name and age were not immediately released, was driving on East 59th Street between Park and Madison avenues just before noon when he veered onto the sidewalk on the south side of the street, striking a man and smashing to a halt, according to the FDNY and witnesses.

"I heard a big boom, got out and saw the cab practically in the front of the store and a gentleman on the curb. He was holding his leg," said Gary Weston, who works nearby.

"I saw the man flying and he fell on the sidewalk right in front of our store," said Elsa Gomez, a 28-year-old worker at neighboring Macaron Cafe.

Both the pedestrian and the taxi's driver were taken to area hospitals and treated for serious injuries, but were in stable condition, an FDNY spokesman said. One was taken to Bellevue while the other went to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, but an FDNY spokesman was not sure who went where.

The pedestrian was able to walk with the help of others to a waiting ambulance, witnesses said.

The cab was empty at the time of the crash, witnesses said.

The driver was not charged or given any summonses after the crash, a police spokeswoman said.

The taxi's medallion is registered with Nagua Taxi, which did not immediately provide information about the crash or the driver involved.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission did not immediately have further information about the incident.
