RIKERS ISLAND — A Rikers Island inmate died Tuesday after having an apparent seizure, according to reports.

Victor Woods was arrested on Sept. 24 and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Woods started convulsing at 3:55 a.m. while in the Anna M. Kross facility, and about 25 minutes went by before an ambulance arrived, the Daily News reported.

The cause and manner of Woods' death are pending further studies, according to the Medical Examiner's office.

Woods, a 53-year-old construction worker, had told jail officials that he needed medication for his high blood pressure, but his fiancée Terri Scroggins said he never received the proper medicine, according to the Daily News.

"Any death in custody is a tragedy," a DOC spokesman said in a statement. "We send our condolences to Mr. Woods' family. At this time, we do not believe there were suspicious circumstances."
