EAST VILLAGE — A man was seriously hurt when a truck hit him as he walked across 14th Street in the East Village Thursday morning, witnesses and officials said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, was crossing the street at Avenue B about 8:50 a.m. when the white box truck knocked him to the asphalt, according to an FDNY spokesman and witnesses.

"He was on his back in the middle of the street. He was bleeding a lot from the head. His legs were moving a little bit," said Mohammed Algabri, 21, a clerk from a nearby bodega who ran over afterwards.

"People ran over and put umbrellas over him. They were telling him, 'Lie down. Don't move,'" Algabri added.

The driver stopped the truck and jumped out to check on the victim, the clerk said.

The victim, who Algabri said regularly visited his bodega with a dog in tow, was taken to Bellevue Hospital with serious injuries, but in stable condition, FDNY officials said.

Police officials did not immediately have further information.
