THE BRONX — A minivan driver was arrested Tuesday morning after he tried to pass a tractor-trailer and crashed into an unoccupied car, killing his passenger, police said.

The 32-year-old driver and his 26-year-old passenger were traveling on Tiffany Street, near Barry Street, just south of the Bruckner Expressway about 6:50 a.m. when the driver tried to pull around a tractor-trailer, police said.

The minivan driver clipped the truck and veered out of control, crashing his Ford Windstar into an empty car, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Emergency workers rushed the pair to Lincoln Medical Center, where the passenger was pronounced dead, police and FDNY officials said. The driver was treated for serious injuries and third person sustained minor injuries, officials said.

Police could not immediately provide the charges for the driver.
