QUEENS — Firefighters evacuated an entire Ozone Park elementary school on its first day back from summer vacation Thursday morning after an air-conditioning unit inside the school burst into flames, the FDNY said.
The blaze broke out at 10:50 a.m. and started spewing smoke into P.S. 63 at 90-15 Sutter Ave. near 90th Street, FDNY and Department of Education officials said.
Firefighters evacuated the school, which enrolls 1,327 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, as a precaution while the building aired out, an FDNY spokesman said.
The fire was brought under control about 11:15 a.m. and students were allowed back into the building shortly afterward, officials said.
No injuries were reported, according to the FDNY.
A staffer in the principal's office declined to comment.
