MOTT HAVEN — A man was arrested a Bronx hit-and-run that left a 50-year-old woman critically injured earlier this month after she tried to save two men by pushing them out of the way.

Alex Hernandez, 25, of Mott Haven, was charged with vehicular assault, failure to notify accident with injury and failure to report an accident, according to police.

Police initially said that it appeared that the crash was intentional, but did not have any information Wednesday.

The victim, whose name was not released, was hit by a white sedan making a U-turn around 1 p.m. on Aug. 18 by Bruckner Boulevard and 138th Street, police said.

Henry Maldonado and Julio Carrillo said they were with the victim at the time of the accident and that she pushed the two of them to safety before being hit by the car herself.

Maldonado was thrilled to hear that an arrest had been made.

"I'm going to go to work happy today," he said.
