MANHATTAN — A woman fended off a man who followed her into her Central Harlem home Tuesday and tried to rape her, police said.

The 41-year-old woman was sitting on the front steps of her building when a man tried to strike up a conversation about 9:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

When she walked back into her building, the man followed her and tried to rape her, but police said she was able to fight him off.

The man, who is in his mid-20s and stands about 5 feet 9 inches, was wearing black shorts with a green T-shirt emblazoned with the number "4," police said.
