WEST VILLAGE — The city's Department of Buildings issued a stop work order at a Morton Street construction site after two construction workers gutting the interior were sent plummeting to the ground Thursday morning when the third floor gave out, officials said.

The workers, who were not immediately identified, were gutting 16 Morton St., near Seventh Street, when they fell about 7:50 a.m., according to FDNY officials and Department of Buildings permits.

They were taken to Bellevue hospital and listed in stable condition, officials said.

The workers were on the third floor and helping hoist a 23-foot beam when the floor gave out, according to the DOB which responded to the scene.

The DOB issued a stop work order for the site along with a violation for Setanta Restoration, Inc., of Yonkers, with a violation for failing to safeguard its workers and breaching the terms of its permitted plan, according to a buildings department spokesman.

Reps for Setanta did not respond to repeated calls for comment.

Peter Arnold, who is listed as the owner of the property on the city's building records, did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
