THE BRONX — A worker was fatally crushed when a 2,700 pound battery tumbled onto him as he unloaded it from a truck on a service road to the Throgs Neck Bridge Tuesday morning, officials said.
The private contractor, whose name was not immediately released but who sources said was 62, was unloading the battery about 7:50 a.m. outside 4260 Throgs Neck Expressway in the Bronx, a service building for the MTA, NYPD and MTA officials said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators thought the man's death was an accident and did not suspect any criminality.
The worker had been part of an effort to upgrade the electrical infrastructure at the MTA building, a transit spokeswoman said.
He was crushed by an uninterruptable power supply that helps keep computers running throughout the day, the MTA said.
