STATEN ISLAND — A 91-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a city garbage truck while crossing a road in Port Richmond Friday morning, police said.

Maria Valentino, of Delafield Avenue, was crossing at Clove Road less than a block from her home when the Department of Sanitation truck hit her about 7:23 a.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Valentino was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"The [Department of Sanitation] wishes to extend sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. The department’s highest priority is the safety of our employees and the New Yorkers we serve," a department spokeswoman said.

The garbage truck's driver remained at the scene, the NYPD said. The fatal crash was still being investigated Friday afternoon.
