QUEENS — An fundraiser in memory of a city sanitation worker killed by a street sweeper last week collected more than $50,000 in just five days, according to the fundraising website.

Steven Frosch, 43, of Garden City South, LI, who had worked for the Department of Sanitation since 1999, was killed in an accident at his work garage in Maspeth on June 21, while working on his sweeper.

Frosch, who leaves behind a wife and four children, was pinned by another street sweeper.

Frosch’s family and friends started a Go Fund Me campaign last Sunday, “In Memory of Steve Frosch,” which had a goal of raising $10,000.

Since then nearly 700 people contributed money to the fund, and as of Friday morning $53,125 had been raised.

“As you can see, the amount of money raised in just a short period of time, is a true testament to the person that Steve was,” Lisa Modica, Frosch’s cousin, wrote on site Thursday. “Our family is completely devastated and will miss Steve more than you can ever imagine.”

In a message posted on the Department of Sanitation website Commissioner Kathryn Garcia wrote that Frosch’s death highlighted the perils of the job.

“We are all reminded that this is a dangerous job that requires constant vigilance for ourselves, our partners, and the public,” Garcia wrote. “And it is a job without which the city could not exist.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at Frosch's funeral Friday morning at Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Franklin Square, LI.

He called Frosch's death a "cruel blow," according to the Wall Street Journal.
