The English Beat formed in Birmingham in 1978, during a period of high unemployment and social upheaval. Although the band racked up more than a dozen UK hits, including "Tears of a Clown," "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Stand Down Margaret" and "Save it for Later," outside the British Isles, the band was relatively marginalized. Combining ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock, the The English Beat was at the forefront of the 2 Tone Ska revival alongside The Specials and Madness. After their 1983 breakup, bassist Andy Cox and guitarist David Steele formed the Fine Young Cannibals with Roland Gift, finally conquering the US with two consecutive number one singles, "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing" in 1989. At City Winery, 155 Varick St, TriBeca. $40/$60.

Beck is playing two big shows this week, Hammerstein Ballroom tonight and Central Park’s Summerstage Tuesday. The Summerstage concert is sold out, tickets to tonight’s show at Hammerstein Ballroom are available from $80 at Ticketmaster. 311 West 34th Street, Midtown. 8 p.m.
