QUEENS — Police officers at the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica are mourning their colleague, Officer Curtis Johnson, who was killed in a motorcycle accident while off-duty Monday.
Johnson, who lived in Jamaica, was remembered as a “person who was always smiling and would do his best to help the community in any situation,” one of his colleagues said. “And when I say he was always smiling, I mean, literally, his smile would light up a room.”
Johnson, who was killed in a crash Monday afternoon on Linden Boulevard and 158th Street in South Jamaica, had approximately four years in the department, authorities said.
He was initially assigned to the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where he was part of Operation Impact, which floods higher crime areas with young officers, police sources said.
He worked in the 103rd Precinct for about a year-and-a-half and was assigned to the 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. shift.
“He was a go-to person, someone you could always rely on,” his colleague said. “He would always take any assignment he was given and he did it to the best of his ability while maintaining great professionalism and courtesy to the community which he served.
“It’s a tremendous loss for the precinct and for the community.”
Johnson, who was married for two years, did not have children, police sources said.
He was riding his Harley-Davidson east on Linden Boulevard about 5 p.m. Monday when he smashed into a Chrysler Concorde going in the opposite direction as its driver turned onto 158th Street, according to the NYPD.
The motorcycle skidded into another car, a Nissan Altima, traveling behind the Concorde, police said.
The officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he died, police said.
No criminality is suspected, according to the NYPD.
