SOUTH JAMAICA — An off-duty NYPD officer riding a motorcycle died Monday evening in a collision with a car, police said.
The officer, Curtis Johnson, 28, was riding his Harley Davidson east on Linden Boulevard about 5 p.m. and smashed into a Chrysler Concorde going in the opposite direction when its 25-year-old driver turned onto 158th Street, according to the NYPD.
The officer, who worked at the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica and had approximately three years in the department, was taken to Jamaica Hospital, police said.
The motorcycle skidded into another car, a Nissan Altima driven by a 43-year-old man, traveling directly behind the Concorde, police said.
Neither of the cars' drivers were injured and both remained at the scene. No criminality is suspected, according to the NYPD.
"It just seems like a horrible accident," a police spokesman said.
Johnny O'Bannard, 63, of Rockaway, was sitting in a car with a friend at the intersection when the accident happened.
“We heard a loud impact, we got out and went over there to see what’s going on," O'Bannard said. "I saw a motorcycle on its side and a guy lying down. He wasn’t moving but a lot of people said he was still breathing. He was in bad shape.”
