LOWER EAST SIDE — An elderly woman was killed in an apartment fire in Manhattan early Saturday, officials said.
The victim, who had not yet been identified Saturday afternoon, was found by firefighters at around 1 p.m. after they extinguished the blaze inside 345 Madison Street, the FDNY said.
She was rushed to Cornell Weill Hospital, but declared dead on arrival, the NYPD said.
It was unclear what started the fire, but the FDNY fire marshal was investigating the cause, a spokesman said. The medical examiner will determine the victim's cause of death.
The woman's identity was being withheld pending notification of her relatives, according to police.
