EAST VILLAGE — A runaway car put two people in the hospital when it crashed into a local hardware store Monday afternoon, witnesses and officials said.

A silver sedan slammed into the front of Saifee Hardware at 114 First Ave. about 4 p.m., scattering spring flower displays at the corner of East Seventh Street. Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Fire Department officials said.

It is unclear what caused the crash.
