WEST VILLAGE — A tree in full bloom came crashing down on Bleecker Street Thursday afternoon, brightening the day of many passersby.

The unidentified tree, which missed pedestrians and parked cars on its way down, bowed low over the sidewalk between Charles and Perry streets, offering bright white flowers to residents.

A bus slammed into the tree, which stood on the north side of the street, a few days ago, uprooting it and cracking the sidewalk, workers said.

Then at about 4:30 p.m. there was a cracking sound and the tree came down across Bleecker Street.

“It’s sad. It was a really pretty tree,” said a woman who works next to where the tree formerly stood.

Locals called 911 and the fire department arrived quickly and cut apart the tree to clear the street, witnesses said.

While people stopped to pick off branches a man stopped to admire the scene.

“That’s going to save you all a trip to the flower shop,” he said before walking off.
